13C metabolic flux analysis (13C MFA) is the inference of intracellular fluxes from tracer experiment data (extracellular concentrations and intracellular metabolite labeling distributions), biomass composition, and a model of metabolic reactions and carbon transitions. These fluxes represent the flow of material through the cell and their relative rates can be used to better understand cellular phenotypes, inform strain engineering decisions, and/or to improve predictive models. My two main projects focus on using 13C MFA to investigate an unusual growth phenotype upon perturbation of the carbon catabolite repression system in baker’s yeast and on correcting a growth deficiency resulting from disruption of ethanol production.
